IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems - AIX digital edition - February/March 2009 - (Page 5)

Editor’s Desk Inside this month’s issue Cooking Up a Management Solution I was recently sorting through my recipes, as I’m hosting a party for a friend’s birthday. I pretend I’m a culinar y genius, but really I just follow someone else’s instructions and hope whatever I’m cooking tastes OK. My “cookbook” consists of a heap of cooking magazines and a stack of printouts from my favorite Web sites. Although I’m only planning to serve appetizers and dessert, it took hours to sift though my recipes. Then, I had to go through each stack again to decide which items would go together. I couldn’t help but think—as I was sitting knee-deep in recipes—that it would be nice to have one place to keep all of my files, with sections for each course. Even better, what if it were a digital-management system? Then I could use it to sort and search my files, and I could access it from anywhere. This problem is pretty small, but I’m sure systems administrators find themselves in similar situations, especially with the advent of virtualized systems. That’s why IBM has many solutions aimed at improving and simplifying systems management. In the December issue of the magazine, articles outlined major programs like Systems Director 6.1 and the accompanying Enterprise Edition for AIX* users. This month, we delve a little deeper into specific areas where you may need help. While quite different from the mess of papers strewn around my living room, I’m sure workload partitions (WPARs) can be challenging to manage. AIX 6 includes a new feature called WPAR Manager. This issue’s cover story by Technical Editor Jaqui Lynch, “Managing It All” on page 14, describes how you can use it to create, track, manage and monitor WPARs. Virtualization creates some new terminology and concepts. Power* Systems and PowerVM* software provide an effective method to manage virtualized servers, and IBM’s Charlie Cler outlines how Power Systems processors and I/O resources are mapped into virtual resources. The article begins on page 19. While virtualization has changed the systems administrator’s role, managing updates to your infrastructure is still a vital task. Technical Editor Ken Milberg offers tips on managing AIX updates, beginning on page 28. While I should find a digital solution for my recipefiling dilemma, IBM has many solutions available now to help with your systems-management conundrum. As a matter of fact, even this magazine is available in a digital version. You’ll now have access to all of the content found in the print edition. You’ll also be able to easily share articles with colleagues, make notes on pages and save past issues for future reference.
