MCCLOUD, on the southern slope of Mount Shasta, is a picturesque community that offers everything from luxury accommodations and fine dining to camping and picnicking. DUNSMUIR, just south of the byway and the City of Mount Shasta, has a century-long history as a railroad town. The WEED Historic Lumber town Museum, on the western slope of Mount Shasta, offers a large collection of artifacts including a display of antique logging equipment. Traveling north, Grass Lake provides a scenic stopover point and Deer Mountain is popular for snowmobiling and backcountry snowshoeing. THE CITY OF MOUNT SHASTA is known for its wide variety of bookstores, galleries, gift shops and restaurants, as well as the Sisson Museum and Mt. Shasta Fish Hatchery. 17 http://www.volcaniclegacybyway.org
