& where we bring you follow-up articles with application hints and upgrade news about gear already reviewed in Recording Apple Logic Pro 9 New features and flexibility mark the latest version of this comprehensive Mac DAW Review by Bob Emmet W ith seemingly little fanfare, Apple has released the latest update to the Logic software family: the new version of Logic Studio, which combines new versions of Logic Pro (9), Mainstage (2), and Soundtrack Pro (3) with a large library of bundled content, software instruments, plug-ins, and additional apps. The Logic Pro 9 update includes several new major features, and it also focuses on workflow and usability improvements—over 200 of them, according to Apple. new Pedalboard and Amp Designer plugins will rock your world. A new collection (Vocals Jam Pack) of vocal phrases, sounds and loops adds a human element. Then there are the workflow improvements, which range from subtle touches like highlighted window pane tracking to the elegant Bounce in Place, an elaborate and versatile new way of rendering audio tracks. We won’t be able to cover all of these, or we’d be writing until the release of the next update but we’ll pick a few gems out of the bunch and dig in. 1. In Flex View, this track has been analyzed and transient markers put in place. These improvements appear to be part of Apple’s apparent mission to rid Logic of its reputation for difficulty: Logic Pro 9’s compact mini-manual, included with the software, will get most casual users making music quickly and easily—without having to learn about Objects, the Transform window or the notorious Environment. Fortunately, however, these advanced features—the heart and soul of an application which defined the standard for reliable and sophisticated MIDI sequencing—are all still there for those who know (or want to learn) how to use them. There’s even some new Transform Window presets for hard-core tweakers. But finding time for the old-standby Logic tricks can be tough for a starry-eyed user; it’s just that now there’s so much more in the package! Logic Pro 9 adds impressive new audio-manipulation capabilities such as Flex Time, Audio Quantization and Sampler Track creation. Guitarists—theRECORDING JANUARY 2010 Flex your power Logic Pro 9 provides a multitude of new tools for altering track tempo and region length, which come under the general heading of Flex Time. There’s Varispeed, which activates a quick-and-dirty tempo change for audition purposes with or without pitch alteration. Another option is Audio Quantizing, wherein an audio region or track can now be quantized via the Parameter Box settings in much the same way as a MIDI recording. Import Tempo makes a Project conform to the tempo of imported audio. Flex Time’s most noteworthy new time-manipulation method, however, is Flex Editing, which uses a special mouse tool called the Flex Tool or a special mode view called Flex View. There are several ways to use Flex Editing. Here’s one: The user selects a track and chooses “Flex View” from the Arrange Window’s “View” menu; the software then analyzes the material and places transient markers throughout (see screenshot 1). A variety of Flex Modes are available to manipulate the analyzed audio: Slicing, Monophonic, Rhythmic, Polyphonic, Tempophone, and Speed. Once the audio track has been analyzed, it’s easy to move around. In Flex View, you can click anywhere and “push” audio sections forward or backward in time. How the gaps created by these edits are filled depends on the Flex Mode. In four of them, there’s time expansion to fill the void (see screenshot 2), but Speed Mode uses pitch change alone and Slicing doesn’t alter timing at all. The Flex Tool lets you set Flex Markers quickly and elegantly. Clicking in the top half of a track places one Flex Marker, which lets you work on an entire audio region if there are no other markers present. Clicking in the lower half of the region places Markers at the two nearest transients, so only audio inside this area will be changed. This macro/micro approach to audio manipulation provides a plethora of options for editing. A client recently sent me a production project including his rough vocal, but noted the tempo was too fast.
