Now, I want to say that even if you don’t submit anything, it’s still worth coming to see the presentations and to listen to the judges commenting on the various recordings. Even if the recordings aren’t your own, hearing the commentary can be very, very enlightening. The judges are all experts with good ears, but they are different experts with different agendas and that makes for very interesting discussions. If your school doesn’t have a student AES chapter, that’s a shameful thing and you should talk to your academic advisor about starting one. But even if you don’t have a local chapter, you can still join the AES as a student member and be eligible to enter the Student Design contest. The Design contest accepts any kind of design, software or hardware, and there are really no constraints on what kind of design you can submit. Folks have submitted synthesizer projects, guitar pedals, mixing consoles, and virtualization software. And the AES will accept projects from anyone as long as they are a student and a member of the AES. All you have to do

AES: Calling All Students
I regularly use this space to tell our readership about how wonderful the Audio Engineering Society is, and how they’re doing fine things both to the advance the state of audio technology and to publicize that technology among the community. I do it often enough that a lot of people are probably sick and tired of listening to me ramble on about how great that organization is, and they have probably already turned the page back and are looking at the reviews and other good articles by now anyway. But in the event that you are still reading, especially if you’re in school right now studying music recording technology as a lot of our readers are, I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about a rather little-discussed but very important and fun set of events at the annual AES Conventions: the student contests. Now, some of the individual local chapters have some fun contests, especially some of the European chapters. But the two big contests that appear year after year at the conferences are the Student Recording competition and the Student Design competition, which are presented at the annual conventions. To enter, you have to do a couple things. For the Recording contest, you need to be a member of a student AES chapter and that does kind of limit things a bit. Each chapter can submit one entry in each of the recording categories, and those are “Stereo Classical,” “Stereo Pop/Rock,” “Stereo Jazz/Blues,” “Stereo World/Folk,” “Classical Surround” and “Non-classical Surround.” They have to be submitted a month before the conference, and you can send them in over the net or in physical mail in a variety of formats. If you’re judged and named as a finalist, then you have to come to the AES Convention and give a short presentation on your recording and how it was made.

is create something, then write about it, then be willing to come to the convention and talk about it. The fine thing about the AES show is that it gives a lot of different people from a lot of different places somewhere to sit down and talk about what they are doing. Sure, people are giving papers and people are selling products, but the common factor that’s important here is the people themselves. The Design competition is a fun way to let other people know what you’re doing and to see what other people are doing. Poke your head in at the AES Student Delegate Assembly website at www.aes-sda.org and you’ll see information on entering both the Recording and Design competitions. Pass them on to friends of yours who are students, if you’re not a student yourself. And, even if you’re not a student, come and see the competition presentations if you’re at the AES show.
