Waldorf Largo

In the James Bond universe, Ernst Stavro Blofeld is a flamboyant mastermind of international terror, while Emilio Largo (from the Bond book and movie Thunderball) is his second-in-command— best known for starting the stolen-nukesfor-ransom fad and for throwing people to the sharks... literally. In the synthesizer universe, Waldorf’s Blofeld is a feature-packed hardware synth, while Largo is a closely-related software synth that mixes wavetables with analog modeling, intricate modulation routing, and a complex arpeggiator. The result is a powerful sonic tool with enough versatility to leave your imagination both, ahem, shaken and stirred. Getting started Running the installer is a quick and simple process. About 98 MB of content was installed on my Mac, including the VST and AU plug-ins, preset libraries, and PDF copies of the thorough, 98page manual in English and German. The included Soft eLicenser program authorizes Largo via a single-use activation code. You’ll need an Internet connection to complete the process. Largo’s layout is both easy on the eyes and well organized. The most essential parameters are the most visually prominent, and are laid out in a fashion that follows the basic signal flow. Secondary features are accessed via menu panes in the lower portion of the panel. (See the screenshot.) Each Largo sound program can have from one to four Parts. The panel, packed as it is, only displays the parameters of one selected Part at a time. Each Part boasts three oscillators, two sub-oscillators, a noise source, three LFOs, three envelope generators, a 16-point modulation matrix, glide/portamento controls, an arpeggiator, several audio sub-mixers, a ring modulator, two resonant multimode filters with programmable drive, a four-band parametric eq, various stereo panning controls, and two multi-effects units. Whew! And remember—each sound program can have four completely independent sets of all of these parameters.

Navigating the waves The three main oscillators all produce digital models (“Virtual Analog” in Waldorf-speak) of the most familiar waveshapes from traditional analogue synthesis: sine, triangle, square/pulse, and saw. Oscillators 1 and 2 can also be used as wavetable oscillators. So, what, you may be wondering, are wavetables anyway? Think of each table as a collection of extremely short samples. When you select one of these “waves” from the table, you hear a steady timbre. Using a modulation source, like an LFO or the mod wheel, you can sweep through the various waves in a table, making the timbre evolve over time rather than remaining constant. These sweeps can be slow and subtle, or fast and brash, and can cover all or part of a given wavetable, including the traditional waveshapes if desired. Largo has 68 different tables, each containing up to 128 individual waves, taken from earlier Waldorf and PPG synthesizers. No compromises, Mister Bond The real heart of Largo may be the modulation matrix. In each of the sixteen slots, any of 38 possible modulation sources can be routed to 58 possible destinations! A slider then sets the amount of impact the modulator will have on the modulated parameter. There are also four Modifiers that perform arithmetic and logic operations on the parameters you select, and pass the results along as modulation sources.
