Forward Do you have moments when you feel like looking beyond the horizon? When a notion of “What else is there?” grabs you and makes you wonder what you could do with your skills and equipment that you haven’t tried? I think we all experience this once in a while, and here at Recording we bring you articles now and then that can show the way forward, into uncharted territory. To name the most recent examples: In the September issue, Mike Pappas showed how simple it can be to record a big orchestra—with just a few pieces of equipment, but the right ones and of the best quality, supported by good planning and teamwork. And in August we brought you an in-depth piece by Beto Hale on his composition and production of the music for a theatrical play. We wish to end the year with more eye-opening contributions from recording musicians who have branched out and found success in areas not all of us have explored. One such area is that of music for television. Andre Fratto reappears in these pages, going into great detail about a recent project of his, scoring the theme music for the show Haven (on the Syfy Network). It went from anxious uncertainty through periods of seemingly endless creative efforts to a final moment of triumph, on his birthday no less. How deserving! Much can be learned from Andre’s report; not the least such lesson is that of patience, speed, and willingness to take criticism being more important than having the latest and greatest equipment in the studio. Andre built on his musical skills and on his recording and production chops, and he knew when to accept creative help from a talented collaborator, Leah Siegel, who contributed an idea that became the impetus of the creative flow. Another area is that of sound effects. We hooked up with three recordists who have made that a specialty and who have found value in cooperating, long-distance since they are located in New Zealand, California, and New York. Turns out that there is much scope for individual taste and artistic expression in the choice of sounds and in their production. It’s not all about door slams, car vrooms and ominous low-frequency rumbles. Check out the picture (on page 42) of one of these intrepid souls braving the arctic weather of Duluth while recording a big ship breaking through the ice on the frozen lake. That’s devotion! And for those of you hoping for something perhaps a little closer to home, check Justin Matley’s article on page 48 about music licensing—a possible avenue for your existing music that can bring much success in a crowded market. We hope that some of you will be inspired by these articles. Could they lead to a New Year’s resolution? The year will soon be over, and before we let it slip away, we want to make sure that you find just the right gift ideas in our gift-guide extravaganza, beginning on page 8. Whether you plan on rewarding yourself, or whether you’ll use the guide to steer someone else towards giving you what you’d really like—we think there is something in there for most everybody.
