Godlyke Power-Grip Pedal Mounting Tape $19.95 ($17.50 street); www.godlyke.com There are so many guitar players who take the time to seek out their favorite effects pedals, arrange them in the order that best suits their particular taste, and customize their own pedalboards, sometimes even building their own. Despite digital multieffects processors and software virtual rigs, DIY pedalboards have been making a strong comeback, and for some folks they never left. Manufacturers like Furman, Gator Cases and Pedaltrain, with their customizable pedalboards, and George L’s and Planet Waves with their custom cutting patch cable kits, have recognized the demand in this market, and to keep our pedals in place we’ve traditionally used generic hook-and-loop hardware store products (the famous trademark is Velcro®), which tend to be affordable but not

When you first attach Power-Grip, you must clean the surface thoroughly and then let the adhesive cure for 24 hours. The adhesive then forms a permanent bond to the surface, and you’re ready to rock. The pedals are set in place, and you have to make an effort to get them loose, which is exactly what you’d expect from any such product—and the grip keeps working properly no matter how often or how long you use it. Power-Grip may seem a bit pricey for the amount of tape that you get (it comes in 1 meter rolls, which is about 39 inches) when compared to the prices of the traditional hardware-store alternatives, but it’s a serious product that does meet the needs of a serious pedalboard. Why skimp?— FC with MM Korg monotron $85; www.korg.com Back in the 1970s, Korg, like every other synth maker in the world, was all about analog synthesis, and made a semi-modular keyboard synth called the MS-20. The MS-20 proved enduringly popular as a vintage synth, so much so that a modern plug-in version was released with a special controller that mimicked the original hardware, even down to the patch cords! Now the magically sharp and punchy filter section of the MS-20 has been packaged into a tiny handheld synthesizer called the monotron—you can play it as a standalone instrument, or run external signals through its filter. The monotron runs on two AAA batteries and weighs only a few ounces. As synths go, it’s very simple—one voice triggered by a ribbon controller on the front panel, with a single oscillator and filter, and an LFO with a downward-sawtooth waveform to create pulsating changes in pitch or filter cutoff. A front-panel switch chooses LFO pitch control, filter control, or Standby (power off). You can change the LFO rate (that knob flashes in time) and intensity, the filter cutoff and resonance (“peak”), and the overall oscillator pitch, and that’s it. There’s a tiny speaker on the top panel for use without headphones, and the ribbon controller is painted with a picture of a keyboard to roughly guide you as to pitch control, although you shouldn’t expect to play any lead lines on it. On the rear of the unit are two 1/8" jacks, a mono input for an external audio source to be processed by the filter and a stereo headphone output that disconnects the internal speaker. A thumbwheel controls output volume, and a recessed Phillips-head screwdriver trimpot lets you adjust the range of the ribbon controller so that the painted octave is in fact roughly an octave, or more or less if you prefer. The trimpot’s vital because

consistently reliable. Some work well and others are lacking in quality. It’s required a bit of investigating or trial and error to figure out which ones to use... especially since, up until recently, you couldn’t find a musician recommended, triedand-true pedalboard tape in most music stores. Power-Grip is pedal-mounting tape with a unique surface that sticks to itself—tight rows of stems shaped like tiny mushrooms or pinheads that lock into place against one another. This differs from the typical fasteners that require a female and a male side to stick to each other. The first time I used the traditional-style fasteners, I was in a hurry before a gig and mismatched the hooks and loops, and had to start all over again. It’s a nice thing that you can’t make that mistake with Power-Grip. The traditional hook-and-loop surfaces also accumulate dirt and debris easily, which decreases their longevity. A good brushing cleans Power-Grip to be good as new. The adhesive side of the Power-Grip, used to stick to hard surfaces like the bottom of the pedals and the top of the pedalboards, is weather and temperature resistant, and has worked very well in the weeks since I’ve installed it on some of my pedals. I’ve experienced issues with other products where the glue side has melted over time and lost its adhesive reliability; once I had pedals fall off and get scratched up (so much for resale value!) just by picking up my Pedaltrain pedalboard and leaning it vertically against the wall!
