Audio-Technica ATH-AD700 Headphones $159.95; www.audio-technica.com The new ATH-AD700 headphones from Audio-Technica offer an unusual new enclosure design that makes them extremely light and comfortable while providing classy sound. A pair of spring-loaded “3D Wings” adjust automatically to the shape and size of the listener’s head, cradling the earcups in a perfect listening position without pinching or binding. Despite having 53 mm drivers, this headphone weighs only 280 grams (10 ounces); the light weight and 3D Wings combine to create a virtually fatigue-free listening experience. The phones have a 3-meter straight cable attached to the left earcup, with 1/8" TRS plug and screw-on 1/8" adapter. The cable’s not designed for quick replacement, but you can have Audio-Technica replace the earpads when needed. It’s weird to wear headphones that are as light as the cheap sets given away with low-end portable music players, but sound like they belong in a recording studio! It takes a little while to get used to the 3D Wings; it almost feels like the phones aren’t sealing properly at first, but you soon realize that they just sit in a slightly different way than what you might be used to. The earcups are open-air, so these headphones bleed a fair bit of audio; they’re not really suitable for tracking. (A closed-back version, the ATH-A700, is available, but we didn’t get to test it.) For critical detail monitoring and mixing, though, they’re a joy, as well as for pure pleasure listening. Their very low 32 ohm impedance means they get really loud, even through the tiniest portable player’s amplifier; you can use them anywhere you’d use earbuds, and they sound way better. As I find common with A-T headphones, they are slightly forward in the mids, so lead vocals, guitars, and other central elements in modern rock, pop, country, and similar genres are clear and easy to examine. This forwardness isn’t as strong as with AT’s more affordable headphones, such as the ATH-M35 (reviewed July 2009), so they play nicely with classical and jazz too. The highs are prominent without being spitty or hashy—they were quite brittle out of the box, but settled down nicely after a 48hour break-in with loud music through the phones. The bass is extended but not super-boomy; you hear the deep lows are there,
