but they don’t rattle your teeth. These probably aren’t the best phones for listening to hip hop or to bass-heavy dance styles, but they acquit themselves marvelously in other areas, and in working on my own music I found them to offer clarity and detail when listening for small audio artifacts and mistakes. If you’re looking for a gift of beautiful music that’s as sinfully comfortable and luxurious as it is practical, the new ATH-AD700 headphones from Audio-Technica just might fill the bill. They’re unusual-looking, to be sure, but their sound is pure heaven.—MM Zoom H1 Handy Recorder $99 street; APH-1 accessory package, $24 street; www.zoomfx.com Zoom’s pocket recorders have a reputation for getting smaller, lighter, and faster; we’ve reviewed many of them, but the new H1 is the smallest, lightest, and most affordable yet. At its top end the H1 has a surprisingly firm oval grid that covers two mics, with large slots to let the sound in while doing a good job of keeping the mics out of harm’s way. The display is as wide as the body of the recorder, which isn’t saying much since the entire device measures just 1.375 x 0.875 x 5.25". Considering those space limitations, Zoom’s designers did a good job with the screen. The display changes according to function, but there are no menus, as Zoom makes a point of stressing. The H1 is largely designed to be operated with just one hand, and mostly with the thumb of that hand (if you’re right-handed). Below the display, where most recorders we’ve seen have a fourway control with center button, the H1 has just one big button set inside a slightly raised ring. Only the button is active, and it does multiple duties: record-standby, record, confirm/exit (when deleting files or setting date and time etc.). On the right side are, from the bottom up, the USB jack, followed by buttons and sliders for power/hold (disables buttons), delete, fast-reverse (also works to scroll backwards/decrement through file lists and to assist in setting the record format), play/pause (also works as track marker on WAV files during recording), fast-forward (also works to scroll forward/increment through file lists and to assist in setting the record format), and the input-level control (a plus-minus toggle). Closest to the mics is the mic/line stereo input 1/8" minijack. The opposing side is less crowded, leaving blank space for the gripping fingers. There is the cover to the microSD card slot (up to 32 GB capacity). Near the mics is the volume control (a plus-minus toggle), and the 1/8" mini jack for audio output (line or headphones). The underside has the battery well (the H1 runs on just one AA battery, NiMH or alkaline, for up to ten hours!), a tripod mount, and, close to the mics where an experienced index fingertip can operate them, three toggles: Lo Cut on/off, Auto Level on/off, Rec Format WAV/MP3. At the small end of the bottom is a lanyard slot, and a tiny speaker that is automatically switched off when a cable’s plugged into the audio output jack. The mics are permanently set in a fixed XY configuration. They are very sensitive and amazingly wide-ranging. Not prone to distorting easily, either—I used them with the Auto Level off and the volume control (which ranges from 1 to 100 in a fairly “linear”-sounding response) up in the 70s and registered near-peak readouts without hearing any distortion on playback, or seeing it on the computer. This bodes well for all sorts of applications. The H1 records WAV files at 44.1/48/96 kHz sample rates with 16or 24-bit resolution. MP3 files are recorded at settings from 48 to 320 kbps. The Auto Level is not meant to brickwall the levels, so it is possible

to bring the unit to distortion with unreasonable input levels. The upside is that it works smoothly and doesn’t easily exhibit pumping. The low-cut filter sounds to me like it reaches up fairly high, it tilts the overall response but it certainly does its job. The box includes the recorder, a battery, a fold-out card with instructions (a challenge for eyes of less than 20/20 acuity, but there is a PDF of it on the website that you can enlarge on your screen), and the microSD card with an adapter for the regular SD size to fit card readers. You can purchase the APH-1 accessory package that includes an AC adapter (also available separately) together with a windscreen, USB cord, a small adjustable tabletop tripod, a mic clip adapter, and a pouch. Another little marvel from Zoom, the H1 will find enthused users among recordists for all sorts of purposes, from straight musical performances to interviews to camera-mounted audiofor-video capture.—LzR Steinberg CI1 and CI2+ CI1, $99 (street); CI2+, $299 (street); www.steinberg.net A few months ago in our August 2010 issue, we introduced you to Steinberg’s new Yamaha-built CI2 Advanced Integration USB interface. To jog your memory: the CI2 is a 24-bit 2-input/2output USB audio interface that accepts both XLR and 1/4" inputs, including direct connection of electric guitar and bass. The CI2 works with many different DAWs on Windows and Mac, but it is especially well suited to Steinberg’s Cubase family of DAWs. It includes a large jog-style Advanced Integration (AI) knob and Action Pad for direct control of program and VST plug-in parameters in Cubase. Using the Action Pad to cycle through typical tracking functions—press to record, press again to stop, press again to rewind to the start, press again to play, etc.—gives the user a lot of quick access and control
