Al Bouchard and Joe Bouchard: Keeping It Real— From Blue Öyster Cult to Blue Coupe
I recently caught up with the brothers Bouchard and listened to their group’s album Tornado On The Tracks. I heard some mighty fine sounds, and learning that this project involved more collaborative songwriting and home-studio production than not, I figured our readers would appreciate hearing about Al and Joe and their production tips. Both were most gracious and forthcoming in their responses. On this Blue Coupe album, Joe Bouchard is credited with vocals, guitar, keys, strings arrangements, and percussion. Albert Bouchard’s credits are listed as vocals, drums, keys, acoustic guitar, and percussion. Dennis Dunaway (inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame with the Alice Cooper Group) played bass and sang, and backup vocals were provided by the sisters Tish & Snooky. Robby Krieger (The Doors) guests on slide guitar on one track. assistant recorded 32 tracks on a Mac into Logic. It was drums, bass, guitar, a lady violinist who also sang some duets with Teoman, and a sax player who doubled on clarinet. Teoman’s band is very good. I am very impressed by the level of musicianship there. How did you arrive at the selection for the concert mixes that are yet to be released? I had lots and lots of material to go through. I picked a selection of the best takes and let Teoman make the final decisions. Then I had to match up audio with video, and at some point I didn’t have enough audience in the tracks, so I said I needed to record some people. How did that go? I don’t know how they did it, through the fan club or what, but maybe 20 people came into the studio, and they knew all the lyrics and they sang along with playback and clapped... I had mics as high up and far away as they could be placed, to give a distant impression, and it worked! Great story. And the moral? Go where the gigs are, the world keeps getting smaller!

How does the Blue Coupe band function? Al Bouchard: Except for a few live gigs here and there in the summer, we function as a long-distance collaboration: me in Long Island and Manhattan, Joe in Connecticut on the Massachusetts border, and Dennis in the BridgeportStamford area of Connecticut. Tell me about your gear. Joe Bouchard: I’m pretty much a lo-tech, seat-of-the-pants type recordist. No fancy preamp, I plug my mics into a Yamaha O1V mixer and that goes into the Mac with Digital Performer. AB: In Long Island I start song demos on my MacBook Pro with Digital Performer, and at my place in Manhattan I have a desktop Mac, that’s where I can record and finesse vocals, like those with Tish and Snooky. Dennis also runs Digital Performer. Did you record basics all at once? AB: Joe, Dennis and I went to a rehearsal space-slash-studio, Prime Time Sound in Mt. Vernon, NY, to put down the songs with scratch vocals [See the photo on page 20, of Joe behind a makeshift gobo—Ed.]. The engineer’s name is Tarik, he runs a Pro Tools room with a Soundcraft Ghost console. It was awfully cold around Christmas, then awfully hot in summer when we went back to shoot the video for “You (Like Vampires)”... Were there any keepers from Prime Time? JB: None of the guitars recorded at Prime Time were kept, only the drums and bass guitar were kept from the original session. The guitar parts were just scratch parts that were overdubbed later.
