or CoreMIDI, or if it’s designed to work with a proprietary interface (especially a TRRS guitar box), you may be out of luck. I worked with the iO Dock for several weeks using many different apps, and never ran into a situation where the app was designed for CoreAudio/CoreMIDI and didn’t work flawlessly with the iO Dock. In particular, Apple’s own GarageBand worked seamlessly with the iO Dock, making it a cinch to record guitar and vocal parts or to play the built-in Instruments with an external keyboard. The preamps won’t win awards for vintage tube vibe, but they are very clean and have a fair bit of gain... and they provide plenty of phantom power for even finicky condenser mics, thanks to the iO Dock’s wall-wart, which is rated for an astonishing 3 Amperes of current draw. The audio outs get good and loud and sound great. Direct monitoring works as advertised, as does the video output. MIDI works very well, but your latency and the level to which it is implemented is strongly dependent on how careful the app designers were. And the footswitch jack sends MIDI Start and Stop commands as promised—there doesn’t appear to be a way to reprogram it, although I suppose you could repurpose those commands in a clever enough app. In a nutshell, the iO Dock does in fact do precisely what it promises: it turns the iPad into a tabletop audio and MIDI device with good-quality inputs and outputs. If I have any complaint to aim at the iO Dock itself (rather than at developers offering inconsistent MIDI support—don’t worry, they’ll get theirs when I review their apps in upcoming issues!), it is that many apps either (a) rely on changes in the iPad’s orientation to do certain things, or (b) are ported from the iPhone and are therefore designed to only work in Portrait mode. In the latter case, your app will be sideways on the screen; in the former case, you won’t be able to do certain things without, well, picking up and turning or shaking the iO Dock, cables and all— not very practical! I see some disgruntled users buying a dock-connector extension cable to combine the iO Dock’s connectivity with the need to wave the iPad around. If you do this, be sure that the cable you’re getting has all the pin connections intact; the cheaper ones let you charge or sync your iPad but won’t pass audio. The verdict As an affordable way to turn the iPad into a practical studio device, the iO Dock delivers on all counts. For the cost of a decent-quality USB audio interface, it provides stereo audio interfacing, MIDI, and more, and it does so neatly and reliably. Thumbs up.
