It’s not all about samples While sample libraries are the most common form of content to be bundled and provided with specialized players, this model works with synthesizers as well. Applied Acoustics Systems (applied-acoustics.com) has a variety of virtual instruments based on their physical-modeling Tassman engine; because such diverse instruments as the Virtual Analog VA-1 synth and the Lounge Lizard EP-3 electric piano share the same engine, it is possible to package their presets within a single player application, the AAS Player (reviewed April 2011). While the Player is extremely basic, it is free and easy to load with inexpensive Sound Banks. One Sound Bank, Swatches, is a constantly-updated library of free sounds culled from the various Sound Banks. Camel Audio (camelaudio.com) has a very powerful synthesizer in Alchemy (reviewed February 2010), which combines sample playback with a very deep synth architecture. Camel Audio realized quickly that a fair number of people might enjoy the sounds without even wanting to program them. That prompted the release of the free Alchemy Player (reviewed June 2012), which allows users to load Alchemy sound libraries and play them without a lot of tweaking, for no more than the cost of the library. Do it in your DAW There’s one more source of reliable and easily accessible engine power for sound libraries out there: the tools provided with your DAW. Many DAW programs come with virtual instruments built in, and almost all of them have some means to load thirdparty content; this gives rise to a cottage industry of developers creating content specifically for a given DAW, using tools the musician has already. Probably the most famous of these is Propellerhead (propellerheads.se), whose Reason virtual studio has for years been augmented by prepackaged content called ReFills. These downloads can contain samples, programs for the instruments inside Reason, loops, and more, and are an easy and quick way to expand one’s sonic palette. Our most recent ReFill writeups were on Reason Drums 2.0 and Reason Pianos in August 2009, but many more ReFills have shipped since then. Similarly, Ableton (ableton.com) provides the ability to import Live Packs into its Live DAW; we have written up offerings from several companies that offer Live Packs with multisampled instruments,

drums, and synth presets. Most recently we’ve talked about Puremagnetik (pure magnetik.com; December 2011) and Detunized (detunized.com; June 2012). PreSonus (presonus.com) is worth a mention here for Studio One, mainly because of a user-driven community of content providers sharing their presets and samples for the DAW’s built-in instruments via the built-in PreSonus Exchange user community. Because the EXS24 sampler ships inside Logic for free now, one could place any EXS24 library in this genre. And last but not

least, let’s return to Native Instruments (native-instruments.com) and note that the very powerful Reaktor synth-building tool kit has a whole cottage industry of folks like Twisted Tools (twistedtools.com) making and selling preconfigured Ensembles for it. Fun, fast, and (often) free In today’s market, content is king—the manufacturers want you to buy sounds from them for your compositions, and it benefits them to give you a free or very cheap way to hear what they can do and sharpen your appetite for more. Fortunately we benefit too: With player platforms getting more transparent and easier to use, there are fewer and fewer obstacles between us and the music we can hear in our heads.
