The Audio Engineering Society held its 133rd Convention at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on October 26–29, with the last three days of the show featuring an exhibition hall full of new products for attendees to examine. Show traffic was quite heavy on the first two days of exhibition, giving a strong impression of community interest despite the show’s somewhat smaller size in comparison to recent years. One interesting addition to this year’s show was a Project Studio Expo Track, where a stage at one end of the exhibit hall hosted speakers from a variety of music magazines discussing topics ranging from tracking and mix techniques to mastering and live recording. Recording’s Mike Metlay hosted a discussion of modern music applications and hardware for iOS (above, he’s demonstrating the Auria DAW to the crowd), and participated in a round-table Q&A session featuring editors of many industry magazines. The sessions were well-attended, and we’ll be interested to see if the Project Studio Expo becomes a regular part of future AES Conventions. But for now, it’s time to hit the show floor and see some highlights. We apologize in advance to folks we may have missed; a lot of well-attended booths (AEA, Earthworks, and JBL, to name a few examples) were showing products already known to our readers, and a surprisingly frequent refrain was “Nothing new here, but catch up with us at NAMM.” It will be interesting to see which of the traditionally AES-bound manufacturers give the much larger NAMM Show, with its far more diverse (and chaotic!) audience, a try. In the meantime, let’s see what AES San Francisco had to offer...—MM A-Designs Audio (adesignsaudio.com) has re-released its JM-3001 mic preamp/eq/DI rack, based on the Quad Eight console, with new cosmetics and at a slightly lower price; the new unit is called the Ventura ($2095). ADAM Audio (adam-audio.com) was showing the new F Series monitors, including the F5 and F7 speakers and SubF subwoofer ($499/pair, $799/pair, $399). Recording obtained some of the first F5 and F7 units in the country and you can read the review in this issue. AKG (akg.com) was showing 65th Anniversary Editions of the C451 mic ($599) and the K702 headphones (reviewed in this issue). Also new at the show: the D12 VR ($499), a new dynamic kick drum mic that supplements the performance of the original D12 mic with a phantom-powered active electronic filter that offers three different sonic contours for recording. Antelope Audio (antelopeaudio.com) is best known for its high-precision digital clocking devices, but at AES the firm previewed the Orion 32 ($2995), a 1U rack A/D and D/A converter and audio interface boasting up to 32 channels of I/O at sample rates up to 192 kHz over MADI, USB, or ADAT Optical, with master clocking capability as well. Look for a review soon. Aphex (aphex.com) debuted new 500 Series modules, bringing its total number of offerings to six. New models include the J PRE 500 transformer-based mic preamp ($749), the EQF 500 3-band transformer-based eq ($629), and the COMP 500 optical compressor ($629). Also new: the free Audio Xciter music player app.
