Ableton Announces Live 9 and Push
Ableton has announced the latest version of Live, its studio-recording/live-performance DAW. The upgrade includes a host of new features and added content, in its Live 9 Standard version (with 37 effects, 3 instruments, and 11 GB of content) and as part of the Live 9 Suite (with 40 effects, 9 instruments, and 50 GB of content). Live 9 Intro (with 23 effects, 3 instruments, 4 GB of content, and some feature and track number limitations) will also be released, incorporating many of the Live engine’s new features. New features include: an entirely redesigned browser system with instant audio preview, multiple browsing parameters, and a Rank system to find frequently-used items; Clip-based automation with customizable curves for extremely fine audio control; new effects like the Glue Compressor and newly designed user interfaces for other effects like Compressor and Gate; a suite of new tools for creating MIDI events from melodies, harmonies, and drum tracks extracted automatically from audio input; new MIDI note stretch and transform tools; and much more. Live 9 Suite now includes Max For Live, the integrated version of Cycling ’74 Max that provides user-configurable and extensible MIDI and audio tools, including 24 powerful new Max For Live effects like a Convolution Reverb and Drum Synth. Also new from Ableton: Push, its first hardware device. Built in collaboration with Akai, Push is a tabletop device with 64 velocity- and pressure-sensitive backlit pads, a touchstrip, and an intelligent display with 8 touch-sensitive encoders. It is designed to integrate with Live 9 as a sequencer controller, clip launcher, drum pad matrix, arranger, and even as an alternative keyboard controller with a 2-dimensional layout that provides common fingerings in all keys. MXL Offers A One-Stop Mic Locker
New from MXL Microphones is the 800 Series, a collection of microphones intended to give any beginning studio a variety of mics for common music recording tasks. The mics are sold separately or in the 6-piece Mic Locker; each mic comes complete with its own isolation shock mount and microfiber cleaning cloth. The five products in the line are: the MXL 840 Instrument Mics (sold as a pair), small-diaphragm cardioid pencil condenser mics for drum overheads, acoustic guitars, piano, and strings; the MXL 860 Ribbon, a figure-8 side-address ribbon with high SPL capacity making it suitable for guitar amps and horns; the MXL 870 Utility, a side-address cardioid condenser mic wth a 32 mm diaphragm, FET electronics, and a small size for tight positioning; the MXL 880 Vocal, a large-diaphragm condenser mic with a smooth sound intended for vocals, strings, acoustic guitar, or piano; and the MXL 890 Critical Vocal, a low-noise design for exacting applications such as lead vocals, strings, or solo guitar.
