were looking for some music for commercials and he, Anthony, thought my symphony would work, so he made the connection. Miraculously, everything was being worked out and we recorded the excerpts for the commercials that you reported about at the time. Based on that, the Colorado Symphony commissioned me to write the full symphony, the name of it is Portraits of Colorado, An American Symphony Nr. 1. It will be premiered May 31, 2013 with full orchestra and chorus. Meanwhile, I said, “I have producers and directors of commercials and films who would like to license this music; why don’t we go in and record it, ahead of the concert?”

Oh yes, my samples are right there, in a standard template, the entire orchestra is in front of me, and I can add whatever is needed. What libraries do you use? Vienna Symphonic Library, lots of Prosonus, Spectrasonics Vocal Planet, the MOTU Symphonic Instrument, and ILIO’s Origins which is great for world instrumentation that I use for things like History Channel shows for example. Brass, guitars, some ethnic woodwinds, I play them in. A sampled trumpet never sounds as good as a live trumpet. You have this iso booth... Yes, it fits string players, a small vocal ensemble, although all that’s changing, I’ll be building a studio on top of the garage. How did this session with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra come about? We were sitting here, the artistic director Anthony Pierce, and Scott O’Neill the conductor, talking about an entirely different project. I mentioned that I was writing a symphony about the Rocky Mountains and Colorado and I played them a few bits. Later Anthony called and said Colorado Tourism had approached him, they
