For acoustic drum kits, what is your favorite drum miking setup? On my kick these days I'm still using the Shure Beta 52, aimed at the batterhead center through my "Kickport" (an acoustic maximizer from kickport.com). Snare top is a Sennheiser 504 (not the e604), set just off the rim aiming head center for the "stick and rim" sound. Under the snare is my trusty Shure 545 aimed straight up head center. On the hi-hat is another Sennheiser 504 aimed over the top. On the ride cymbal is an AKG C451E, aimed close to the bell. On the toms are Sennheiser e504 mics angled over the rim towards head center. For overheads I use Neumann TLM 102s, each aimed at the respective right and left side of the kit, trying to keep the kick and snare centered. Room mics are Oktava MK-219s with Michael Joly "premium electronics" mod (see oktava mod.com). In what music styles do you use this setup? RECORDING January 2014 25 I use this setup with almost all styles that come through my studio. It's my playing that changes with different styles. When mixing, I will mix the drum sound accordingly for the song style. Why are these your favorites? My bass drum Kickport along with the Beta 52 gives me my fat kick sound. The 504s seem to be very directional, giving me isolation with very little leakage from the other drums that are in close proximity. The TLM 102s are just great-sounding and very true to the actual sound of my drums as well as the sound of the room. The modified Oktavas are punchy and give a true version of the way my drum room sounds.http://www.kickport.com http://www.oktavamod.com http://www.oktavamod.com http://www.gracedesign.com
