this mic was the same distance from the
snare as the overhead. What he heard
was a huge but somewhat exaggerated
stereo image, so he adjusted the panning
with the floor tom 50% left and the overhead 50% right, and stereo drums were
born!
This sound must have been provocative
even to Glyn's intrepid ears, as he only
uses the stereo panning on three songs on
the album: "I Can't Quit you Baby,"
"Good Times Bad Times" (with channels
reversed), and "Dazed and Confused."
On "Dazed," check out the four bar drum
fill right around the five minute mark for a
nicely exposed example of the imaging.

Glyn's technique, check out the album
You Should Be So Lucky by Benmont
Tench. As he did on the Zeppelin album,
Glyn seems to adjust the stereo panning
to fit each tune, the title track exhibiting a
narrow stereo drum spread and other
tunes sounding more like straight-up
mono. But all the tunes have a clear yet
punchy sound that fits the mix and the
arrangement perfectly.
Here at the Lamont School of Music at
the University of Denver, I have been
encouraging student engineers to take a
leap of faith and experiment with this
technique for appropriate rock as well as
jazz projects. You should try it too! All

you need is four mics, a great drummer with a great sounding kit, and a great sounding room. Keeping the overhead and side mic equidistant from the snare will help center that drum, but I advise starting in mono and adjusting the relative distances of those
two mics to avoid an unnatural hollow sound due to time arrival phasing issues. Once
it sounds good in mono you can pan it out to taste. After all, that is exactly the
approach Glyn used, even if he didn't realize it before his fortunate mistake!
Note that there are a lot of people out there claiming authoritatively (and wrongly)
that Glyn has very specific mic distances for this technique, checked with a tape measure. Glyn's book sinks this myth once and for all; he encourages engineers to play
with placement and really listen for the effect rather than trying to follow a recipe.
As just one example of this, Bruce Kaphan's recent article on drum miking (January
2015), in which he briefly mentions this technique, drew a very nice letter from none
other than drummer Dave Mattacks, who's played with everyone from Fairport
Convention and two of the Beatles to Brian Eno and XTC. Dave wrote, "Just a brief
note to let you know I liked your recent piece in January's Recording... a most enjoyable read! For your information, when I would record with Glyn, he usually aimed to
get the "above the snare" overhead more above a point where the the snare 'meets'
the rack tom, rather than slightly off to the 'hat side.... I thought you may be interested
[to know that]."
To play around with Glyn's technique I invited Forrest Raup, drummer with the hot
new Denver band Eldren, to set up in one of our big rooms and do some bashing for

http://is.gd/GlynJohnsMicSession. We set up just as Glyn does, with the overhead
and floor tom mic equidistant from the snare, tweaked mic positions until things sounded good in mono as well as stereo, then recorded this amazing drummer doing his
best homage to the great John Bonham. We also substituted Royer R-121 ribbon mics
for the condensers for even more of an old-school vibe. I have fallen in love with this
sound and can't wait to try it out on future projects!
