digging deeper by parallel processing individual
tracks, such as overheads or room mics within the kit. I
can then blend the more processed bus in with the normal
drum bus to have an enhanced drum mix.
Another example is what I do sometimes with bass sounds.
Usually with bass synths or bass guitar, I want to accent lows as well as
highs. A great way to independently control both frequency ranges is to
duplicate the tracks, process the two portions of the frequency spectrum separately, and then find a blend between them. In this case, I'll duplicate the audio
tracks and regions. I'll put a lowpass filter on the "low" track, and a highpass filter on
the "high" track. I'll add different EQs, compressors, harmonic exciters, distortions, etc.,
to each individual track, then blend them together to get the sound that I like. To take it
a step further, I can blend those two tracks in with the original bass to accent the lows or
highs the way I want. I can then even bus those three tracks to an aux input so I can
process the bass sound as a whole.
There are lots of possibilities, and it's really easy to go overboard, so I want to stress
a couple of points. Make sure you're using delay compensation on your session when
you're doing this, or else you'll get some gnarly phase cancellation. As I mentioned earlier in the article, make sure you're constantly referencing how everything is sounding in
the mix as a whole, not how it's sounding soloed. Keep in mind that you want everything
to work in the mix. Because it's so easy to overdo this, watch the amount of processing
you're putting on these tracks, and always try to be tasteful in your moves.
De-essing. De-essing is simply choosing a specific frequency range to trigger a compressor. The most popular application of this is on vocals, where you can brighten a vocal
while using a de-esser to tone down obtrusive esses. However, one time I was at a mastering session where the engineer de-essed the whole track. That was really cool to me,
because he made the track really pop out while controlling other harsh frequencies.
Since then, not only do I sometimes put a de-esser on my master fader (very conservatively!), I put it on other instruments that may need the same treatment-bright synths,
guitars, acoustic guitars, anything overdriven, etc. People ask why I don't just EQ out
those harsh frequencies. The answer is that I do, but when I'm dealing with a dynamic
performance, I may want to tone down those annoyances only when they pop out, rather
than cutting those frequencies all the time.

Sidechain compression. I read an article
a long time ago about how Tony Maserati,
when mixing hip hop, would use his kick
drums to trigger a sidechained compressor
on a sub-bass track, essentially molding the
bass around the kick drum. I thought this
was really cool, and I sometimes used that
technique. Some years ago, in EDM and
pop music, creatively sidechain compressing the entire mix (or lots of individual
tracks) with the kick drum became fashionable. Sidechain compressors became a staple in my sessions. Even when I was dealing with other genres, I still kept sidechain
compressing instruments with the drums.
In EDM, the compressor is very aggressive, sometimes compressing 20 dB or
more, to create the pulsating off-beat
rhythm that coincides with the typical fouron-the-floor kick. When I'm mixing hip hop,
R&B, pop, or sometimes even more organic live sounding music, I'll feed the main
drum backbone kick and snare to trigger a
sidechain compressor. I'll have the attack
and release be fairly fast, or feeling rhythmic with the song, and have it compress
just a little bit-maybe 3 to 7 dB. It's great
because it forms the music around the
drums. The instruments get out of the way
just for a split second so the drums come
through clear and punchy. The song now
has some added dynamics, and another
form of glue to tie the instruments together.
