can sound if you bypass its headphone jack
and use a device like this.
As for output, well, the better the
headphones, the more marked the improvement. My less expensive tracking
headphones sounded great through it,
but moving to my upper-end favorites-
the Audio-Technica ATH-R70x, Ultimate
Ears UE Pro Reference Remastered inears, RHA's own T20i in-ears, and the
incomparable AKG K872-took the
listening experience from amazing to
positively mind-blowing.
Describing a D/A is really difficult,
but the best thing I can say about the
Dacamp L1 is what's not there: hash,
spittiness, noise, or anything marring the
perfect delivery of the audio at hand. It's
ruler flat, crystal clear, and utterly without
a signature of its own. Of course, if your
audio's imperfect, those imperfections
will show up in stark relief even on less
revealing headphones... which is exactly
what we want in a D/A!

Conclusions

A great set of headphones is only half of
what an engineer needs to have with him
or her at all times to get a reliable listening
experience no matter where the gig may
be. The other half is a reliable, clear D/A
converter and headphone amp. There are
lots of them out there, but they tend to be
large and bulky; the Dacamp L1 fits in a
pocket with room to spare.
Just to see how small I could go, I
used the cloth pad and silicone straps
to bind my iPhone 6S to the Dacamp
L1, and added the Ultimate Ears in-ear
monitors mentioned elsewhere in this issue.
End result? A pretty darn near perfect
listening environment that could go anywhere with me at a moment's notice.
As you take your studio or live recording
rig to the next level, a reference-quality D/A
is an important element of your monitoring
setup. If you want to combine great quality
with ultimate portability, the Dacamp L1 is a
solution you'll have to hear to believe. We
can't wait to see what RHA does next in
this arena.
