Spitfire's own piano libraries fall into
this category. BT Phobos, however,
is not intended to be a tiny calligraphy pen-it's more of a paint cannon.
Well, four paint cannons, with their
globs of vivid color splashing together
and mixing wildly in midair just before
they hit you in the face. Pull up a preset, press a key or two, and hang on
for dear life!
With its heavily processed sounds and
wide variety of environmental, musical,
rhythmic, and sound-effect content, BT
Phobos is aimed squarely at composers
and scorers who need to create powerful cues that work in a DAW context, do
it in a hurry, and do it with the capability
of tweaking individual elements so the
overall balance works for the project. It's
rewarding to dive deep and massage
hidden parameters, but most of the widebrush stuff happens with the envelopes
and the Convolution Triangle. You can
get in the ballpark fast, which is critical
when under deadline.
CPU usage is fairly light; my
MacBook Pro with a quad core i7
barely hit 25% when playing back
double-fistful chords at 128 samples
of buffer in Ableton Live 9.7. This
isn't hugely surprising; convolution
is a fairly CPU-light operation, and
even when used this way, it won't hit
your computer nearly as hard as, say,
physical modeling.
And the sounds? Well, I'm a sucker
for this sort of thing: film soundtrack
beauty and bombast from start to finish,
with all kinds of epic drums, huge
thick pads, weird noises and glitches,
and shimmering atmospheres... complete worlds of sound at the touch of
a key. Heavy!

Final thoughts

BT Phobos is a joy to use-operation
was bug-free for me, and the ability to
adjust FFT size made it easy to find a
good balance between CPU load and
fast response. That said, BT Phobos
does lack two important features
that we hope will come along in a
future update.

Even with all the excellent provided
content, it'd be awesome to be able
to import and use one's own samples.
Much more important, though, is the lack
of user-created program storage inside
BT Phobos. Tweaked patches can only
be saved as plug-in preset files inside
your DAW; you don't lose your work, but
you can't search or browse your sounds
inside BT Phobos and they're not neatly
contained in one place for easy access,
which makes the creative process a bit
less seamless. [During fact check, we
learned from the folks at Spitfire that this
is a feature they're working to add in a
future update as quickly as possible.]
Those omissions, though, pale in
comparison to the massive power that
BT Phobos provides to the composer; for its polyconvolution capabilities
alone, nothing out there can do what BT
Phobos does. It's instant inspiration, the
sort of tool that can completely transform a song or soundtrack cue with a
single note, or serve as an inspiring
framework for other elements. For film,
video, online, or game content, where
rhythm and evolution are critical to hold
listener interest, BT Phobos offers tools
that are difficult or impossible to find
anywhere else, and presents them in a
fascinating and inspiring way.
For a 1.0 software release (1.0.5
as of this writing, actually) from a
company that's never done its own
plug-ins before, BT Phobos is a scarygreat debut. Well done!
