K apalua’s Bay Course doesn’t keep you waiting long before it springs a treat, one of those “Now this is why I came to Hawai‘i” sorts of discoveries. The par 4, 321-yard fourth hole of this coastal course doglegs left down to the ocean and as you drive toward the green, the scent of the sea blows from the direction of Fleming Beach and the lava point that juts into the ocean beyond the green. In the background is a spectacular block of blue water, broken only by vistas of Moloka‘i’s deep valleys and the domed outline of Lana‘i. It’s a place worth committing to long-term memory, and it’s not even The Bay Course’s signature hole. Designed by Arnold Palmer and Francis Duane, the par 72 Bay Course measures 6,600 yards from the championship tees. It is the most suburban of Kapalua’s three layouts, a park-like track that weaves past the shoreline and some of the resort’s historic and residential buildings. To get from the second to the third hole, for instance, you drive through the parking lot The Bay Course’s signature 5th hole of the Honolua Store. You can even stop in one of two stalls striped especially for golf carts and grab a cold drink and something to eat before continuing on your way. The third hole rolls past The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, legendary for its level of service and rated one of the best hotels in Hawai‘i, and then you drive by the charming Kumulani Chapel. If you’re lucky, a wedding will be in progress at this historic landmark. According to Bay Course staff, accuracy is the key to playing The Bay Course well. While the course is not particularly long, strategically located trees, 68 bunkers and eight water hazards can tack on unwanted strokes to your score. 10
