This hole is typical of the course. Its roughs are shaded by flowering shrubs and trees. The fairway offers forgiveness in its expansiveness, but if you let your guard down, your short game will send your score in the wrong direction. Past #14, the Old Blue heads upslope again, and the vista from the 16th tee box can be distracting even for the most serious players, as the LPGA players discovered. The finishing hole is a relatively kind 158-yard par 3 with an elevated tee and a generous green ringed by four bunkers. Fragrant plumeria trees stand like spectators waiting to applaud, and beyond the bridge is another endless view of the ocean. A fitting end to an unforgettable round. Old Blue’s 15th: on the foothills of Haleakala fairway as the ball will tend to bounce left. Once the ball curves out of sight, there’s no way of telling where it stopped. But at the crest of the hill, it matters little. A magnificent view of Ma‘alaea Bay and Kahalawai is far more interesting, at least for the moment. From here, the Blue Course meanders in a deliberate, but leisurely, manner through much of the resort. Hole #6 takes you past the Wailea Tennis Club, and #7 skirts the Grand Champions Villas, where one can enjoy the golf course without stepping foot on it. By the time you’ve reached #9, you’ve also attained the Blue’s literal high point, some 300 feet or so above sea level.
