Maui's Golf Coast 2007 - (Page 5) Golf Tip With its wide open fairways, the Royal Ka‘anapali Course makes you feel like you can “grip it and rip it.” In reality, the Royal is a target golf course that requires proper position off the tee or you’ll end up with a challenging Astounding views of the neighboring island of Lana‘i are seen from the #9 green at Ka‘anapali second shot over a bunker, around a tree It’s almost enough to make you trade in your clubs for a swimsuit. The 10th hole is a 454-yard, par 4 with a 50foot elevation change. This is mix it up with slender coconut trees. You get to drive your ball through a loose chute formed by these evergreens and palms. The course’s 440-yard, par 4 18th hole is considered one of the best and most demanding finishing holes in Hawai‘i. Arnold Palmer once called it one of the most challenging he’d ever played. The hole plays longer than its yardage, thanks to the prevailing wind and a sizeable brackish water canal, home to a school of large ulua, which runs the length of the fairway and green. If you do well here, you’ll stroll off the course feeling great about your game. Actually, you’ll probably feel great no matter what you score, because any day playing golf on Maui is better than just about any day at all. Golf Digest gives the Royal K a‘anapali an excellent 3.5-star rating.
