Educational Procurement Journal - December 2007 - (Page 16) CERTIFICATION The Three Musketeers Will Unite in Austin by Bob Ashby, C.P.M., CPCM University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Retired) he story of The Three Musketeers – you remember – is really a story of not three, but four. And now, NAEP has its own Three Musketeers (again, there are more than three), and their motto is, not surprisingly, “All for one and one for all!” Sufficiently Teased? Read on. At the 2007 National NAEP Conference, we conducted two Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) exam workshops. David Buck, C.P.M., Director of Purchasing Services at Idaho State University, held one for those who only needed to pass Modules III and IV. I conducted the other workshop for those just starting. The day after the workshop, Kathy Crilly, Soka University; Mary Bacci, MIT; and Bette Gilliland, Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, Alaska – each of whom needed at least one re-test – took the needed test. Paula Taylor, University of Maine System and one of my workshop students, did not even try because, as she stated, no matter what she did, she could score no better than one point below passing. In fact, she had left her study materials in the corner after taking a previous test and had not touched them until she attended my session. Since it T All for one and one for all! took 6 weeks to get the results of the written test, these testers communicated by e-mail and held each other’s spirits up. Then they found: One of them passed Module III but not IV, Another did not pass the one test needed, Another did pass the one test she needed, and The final one had not even tested. At that point, one of them threw her hands in the air and quit. She said she was done. But instead of letting her quit, the others rallied around her. She became the rallying cry. If they would not let her quit, well… they couldn’t either. Just as others before them, they recognized that studying as a group is more productive than studying alone. The problem, of course, was that they were geographically separated. Their Solution? An Online Study Group! They asked if I would help. I had never formed such a group, but I was more than willing if that’s what they wanted. After a number of e-mails, we decided we could 16 EDUCATIONAL PROCUREMENT JOURNAL December 2007
