Young Children - March 2008 - (Page 94) WOYC April 13–19, 2008 EVERY SPRING early childhood educators and programs use Week of the Young Child ( WOYC) to highlight the importance of quality care and education for young children. It’s an annual opportunity to reach out to families and communities and to emphasize the crucial role that adults play in giving children the foundation needed to succeed in school and beyond. This year’s theme is “Bring Communities Together for Children, Children Bring Communities Together.” However you plan to celebrate WOYC, now’s the time to let people know about your event. NAEYC’s free communications kit, downloadable from www.naeyc.org/about/pdf/WOYC_kit.pdf, can help. For example, you can use • the flyer template to let families and others involved with your program know about your WOYC event and how they can participate. You might ask parents to distribute the flyers to friends and other families. • a template to customize a news release for newspapers and television and radio news. Be sure to get the name of the appropriate media contact and follow up with a phone call. • a script for a radio public service announcement (PSA) to help get the word out about the importance of early learning and the issues that affect children. Although the PSA isn’t specifically about your event, it draws attention to the issues in early care and education. There’s also a template for a letter to the editor, which you can send to your local newspaper. visit www.naeyc.org/woyc “Circle of Children” Pin.
