Improving Economies, One Job at a Time
An innovative initiative in Ireland is pushing for businesses to promise to create more than 5,000 jobs by the middle of 2012. Lucy Masterson, a professor at Champlain College in Dublin, recently cofounded Hireland.ie, a new venture that asks small and medium businesses to pledge to create at least one new job in their organization. As of the middle of March, more than 3,200 jobs had been pledged, and the response has been overwhelming. What started as a conversation evolved into a project involving Masterson’s students, and they spread the word on social media sites. A research team found that 52 percent of businesses surveyed were planning to make new hires, but 43 percent were hesitant to open new positions. The goal of Hireland.ie is to encourage those undecided companies to invest in new talent, and so far it seems that the message is hitting home. A similar venture has even been started in the United States with the help of Hireland.ie’s founders. For more information, visit www.hireland.ie.
ErrAtA In “Degrees of Distinction” by Charlotte West in the March/April 2012 issue, Nripendra Khatrichettri was inadvertently misindentified as female. Due to an editorial error, his quotes (which were accurate) implied that he agreed with others who said students are seeking "something different" in their education. The insinuation that he agreed with others was unintentional.
