Finally, in his extensive review of literature to assess how research and theory in study abroad and intercultural learning might inform ISL researchers, Richard Kiely (p. 264) makes this statement about the competing narratives in both fields in the post-9/11 period: “What is clear, and perhaps ironic, is that much of what constitutes international education exchange and study abroad in higher education has always been defined by activities that support national political, economic, and security interests.” He believes

the framework for research must, therefore, take into account what he characterizes as “the socioeconomic and political context of globalization and its asymmetrical effect on different regions of the world (p. 245).” Sustainability, accountability, and reciprocity issues come up throughout this volume as researchers present their critique of service learning in both the United States and overseas. One example of this critique occurs in the last chapter by Mabel Erasmus, who has been engaged with both study abroad and service-learning programs bringing American students to her institution, the University of the Free State in South Africa. She states: “A possible gap that I have discerned, in terms of the impact of ISL on students, is that investigations do not reflect awareness, on the part of faculty, of the fact

that ISL student development provides an ideal opportunity to foster critical awareness of the contentious position of the United States in the world (italics added). U.S. perspectives regarding what global citizenship entails are bound to be intrinsically linked with critical reflections on the role of the United States on the world stage…(p. 360).” Whether you agree or not with the political filter that influences the research critique of many of this volume’s authors, there is little doubt this volume provides a rich perspective for international educators in both fields to debate.
