civilians.
I recently had a conversation with a university president, and he
told me about a scholar from Iraq who was in residence at his business school last year. He spoke of the difference it made to students
about their understanding of Iraq and the personal and professional
difference it made to the visiting scholar who is now back home
teaching Iraqi students how business is done in the United States.
These kinds of interactions, which have the power to help repair
damage done between nations and to bring a better sense of understanding between people of different cultures, are at the core of
the value of international education.
It's been nearly two years since all of the U.S. troops in Iraq were
withdrawn-the process began in 2009 and was completed in December 2011.
In the years during and since the U.S.-led military presence in
Iraq, higher education, like other Iraqi institutions, suffered from
the consequences of the upheaval that a war causes.
We can't forget that in regions that are rebuilding after a war,
everyday people have their lives-and their dreams-like pursuing higher education-interrupted. In the aftermath of upheaval,
individuals and institutions are left to put the pieces of their lives
and their structures back together again.
International educators have the unique position of being able
to see past the damage and find ways to help universities, faculty,
and students heal from the wounds of war.
To showcase just how powerful connecting with university counterparts that have been affected by war can be, IE is announcing a
two-part series about U.S. partnerships with Iraq and Afghanistan
to help revitalize higher education in those nations after U.S. military presence. "Reawakening Higher Education in Iraq" by David
Tobenkin is the first article in this series, which is in this issue. The
article about partnerships with higher education institutions in Afghanistan is planned for publication in 2014.

Also in this issue
Our feature article, "Core Values," shows how many colleges and
universities are globalizing their general education requirements.
Our annual health and insurance supplement's cover story,
"When a Student Dies Abroad," offers information on how to prepare for such a tragedy.
