IN Brief
NAFSA Wins Publishing and Web Awards
NAFSA earned two print publishing awards and a Web award this year from the
judges of the Apex Awards for Publication Excellence. International Educator
magazine received an award in the feature writing category for "Transforming
Lives" by Susan Ladika, which was the cover story in the November/December
2012 issue. The article examined the impact that international education has had
on the issue of refugees across the globe.
The second award was achieved for the book Internationalizing the Campus
2012: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities. The award reflected overall
excellence in both editorial and design. This marks the eighth consecutive year that
International Educator has received at least one publishing award and the seventh
consecutive year for the Internationalizing the Campus report series.
The NAFSA website received an award in the home pages category. This was
the third award for the redesigned website this year, having taken two in the
Association Media and Publishing Excel awards contest earlier this year.

New data reveal that the number of foreign students in
Germany is at an all-time high.
A report released in July 2013 by the German Academic
Exchange Service (DAAD) confirms that Germany's initiatives
in the race to recruit international students are proving
effective. More than 265,000 foreign students enrolled at
German higher education institutions in 2012, accounting for
11.1 percent of all students.
The report, which includes statistical data about
international students studying in Germany and international
mobility trends, reveals that one in 10 German graduates has

8

a foreign nationality. The largest proportion of students, more
than a third, come to Germany from Asian countries, followed
by Russia, Austria, and Bulgaria.
DAAD Acting Director Peter Kerrigan said that increasing
the international mobility of German students and attracting
international students are key objectives of Germany's higher
education policy. "The motivation for German universities to
recruit international students is different from American and
Canadian universities," he explained. Since there are no tuition
fees in Germany, German universities are motivated primarily
by "international students' output and input-what students
will bring to the table so that German university
experience becomes that much richer," he said.
The DAAD committee adopted its "Strategy 2020"
in February 2013, which outlines objectives related to
attracting the best German and international students,
academics, and researchers. "Providing grants to and
from Germany is one of the most effective initiatives
the DAAD has used to recruit international students and
promote a circulation of ideas and talent," Kerrigan said.
His statement echoes findings from a report issued
in 2011 by the British Council, Global Gauge, which
named Germany the most supportive country for
international students.
