Higher Education
and Jobs in Africa

C

AN HIGHER EDUCATION SOLVE AFRICA'S JOB CRISIS?

That is a question researchers are trying to tackle as a
projected 11 million young people enter the job market

in sub-Saharan Africa each year during the next decade.
The Universities, Employability, and Inclusive Development
project, a three-year multicountry research and advocacy
project on higher education and employability in sub-Saharan
Africa, seeks to uncover some answers. Led by the University
of London's Institute of Education, the project will focus on
Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and, by way of comparison, the United Kingdom.
Universities and the higher education system in these

Views on Study Abroad and Employability
The majority of students from the United
States and the United Kingdom surveyed
believe that an overseas study experience
could provide an edge when applying
for jobs in the future, according to a new
research report from the British Council,
Broadening Horizons 2014: Embedding a
Culture of Overseas Study.
Findings from the study are based on
more than 7,300 interviews with U.S. and
UK students.
Of the U.S. respondents who said they
felt they would need more than their
degree to secure the job they wanted

and stand out from the crowd, 90 percent
said they believed an overseas study
experience could give them an edge
when applying for jobs down the road.
Of the UK respondents on the same
topic, 88 percent said they believed an
overseas experience could give them an
edge in future job applications.
As the report notes, however, these
findings contrast with responses from
both groups in terms of selecting the
main nonacademic drivers that interested
them in study abroad. Better employment
prospects was ranked third by UK

respondents (17 percent) and sixth by
U.S. respondents (11 percent), while
experiencing other cultures and travelling
overseas were ranked as the number one
and number two drivers.
The report notes, "This disconnect
may be illustrative of the perspective
students have of the core value placed on
the study abroad experience. Redefining
study abroad by communicating its value
directly to increasing employability could
align this disconnect highlighted here."
