Report Highlights University-Business Cooperation
A new European Commission report highlights the benefits of and need for
university-business cooperation in the field of education.
The report, Measuring the Impact of University-Business Cooperation, describes
the benefits of collaboration between universities and the business community by
dividing them into the following four categories:
●

Those aimed at strengthening levels of human capital, with labor supply and
employment implications;

●

Those relating to stimulating entrepreneurship through teaching and learning;

●

Those relating to knowledge exchange, aimed at promoting or stimulating
product/process innovation or new pedagogy; and

●

Those relating to raising the profile of an organization.
The authors claim that established methodologies for assessing the outcomes

and impact of business-university cooperation in the field of education are limited.
They therefore recommend two linked approaches for assessment: a scorecard
assessment of investment proposals.
The report was prepared for the European Commission by Cardiff University,
Newcastle University, and Imperial Consulting. It is available free-of-charge on the

a recently released
Brookings Institute
report, The Geography of Foreign Students
in U.S. Higher Education:

Origins and Destinations. The report tracks
the local origins, size, and growth rate of the
foreign student population on a metropolitan level.
The report shows that most foreign students in the United States come
from large, fast-growing
cities in emerging markets. For example,
Seoul, Beijing,
Shanghai, Hyderabad, and Riyadh
sent the most
higher education
students to the
United States from
2008-2012.
It also identifies the
118 U.S. metropolitan ar-

eas that have the greatest numbers of foreign
students, and measures their monetary contributions to these locations.
"It's important to understand how students from fast-growing foreign nations can
help build global connections and shore up
our local economies and businesses," said
report author Neil Ruiz, associate fellow for
the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program.
"This report provides the data to do that."
The Geography of Foreign Students in U.S.
Higher Education: Origins and Destinations
draws on and analyzes data from the Student
and Exchange Visitor Information System
(SEVIS) database submitted by institutions
that international students attended from
2001-2012 under an approved F-1 visa.
