Turkey has announced that it will invest U.S.
$96 million in government scholarships for
international students as it seeks to boost
international student enrollment there during
the next decade.
With approximately 54,000 international
students currently in Turkey, the government
is looking to increase that number to
200,000 by the year 2023, according to a
report in Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah.
"Turkey scholarships," as they are
known, are offered for associate degree,
undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate
programs.
Demand for the scholarships is high: more
than 55,000 scholarship applications were
received in 2013 and nearly 82,000 in 2014,
according to the Türkiye Burslari Scholarships
website. There are about 12,000 Turkey
scholarship students currently enrolled in 105
universities in 55 cities.
The five countries with the greatest
number of scholarship applications in 2014
for undergraduate programs are Syria,
Afghanistan, Egypt, Yemen, and Somalia. The
top five in 2014 for postgraduate programs
are Pakistan, Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria,
and Somalia.

indings from a new survey conducted in Europe
provide some insight into trends in international
education as well as knowledge and skill needs
among internationalization staff.
The EAIE Barometer survey gathered more than
2,500 responses from individual practitioners in the field
of internationalization (within and beyond higher education institutions) to map the state of internationalization in
Europe. Most respondents, according to the European
Association for International Education (EAIE), work with
various aspects of international education in their day-today roles, such as international partnerships, management
of the international office, and international programs.
Initial findings, released in September during EAIE's
2014 annual conference in Prague, include the following:
n The main reasons to internationalize are quality of
education, preparing students for a global world, and
attracting international students.
n Leading higher education institutions show the highest
occurrence of a separate internationalization strategy,
while integrated strategy is most common in average
higher education institutions.
n Higher education institutions with a separate internationalization strategy show the greatest increase in
international activities.
n Top challenges across Europe include implementing
international strategic partnerships, implementing international strategy, and increasing outgoing student
mobility.
n Practitioners show greater knowledge needs than skill
needs.
