The largest-ever donation to Northwestern University will be used to establish
a global studies institute as well as to
provide scholarships for international students, expand a visiting scholars program,
and fund interdisciplinary research.
The globally focused gift of $100 million was made earlier this year by Roberta
Buffett Elliott, sister of billionaire investor Warren Buffett and a graduate of
Northwestern who has long supported
international studies at the university.
According to Northwestern, the donation will fund the Roberta Buffett Institute
for Global Studies, which will advance important global issues such as the spread
of democratic political systems and economic development. Funding will also
be used to help provide scholarships for
international students, expand a visiting
scholars program, provide travel grants
to students for study abroad, hire faculty
members focused on international areas,
fund research related to solving global
problems, provide funding for graduate
student fellowships, and create a postdoctoral fellows program.
"One of the four pillars of the [strategic] plan was globalization, and thanks to
Bertie's visionary philanthropy, we now
will have the resources in place to transform nearly every corner of the university's
global programming," said Northwestern
University President Morton Schapiro.

LEVERAGING TUITION TO
PROMOTE INTERNATIONALIZATION
FRANCE SHOULD INCREASE

what it charges international students
who are not from the European Union
(EU) to study there, says a new report
from a policy planning office of the
French prime minister. The report,
Investir dans l'Internationalisation de
l'Enseignement Supérieur (Investing
in the Internationalization of Higher
Education) recommends reinvesting funds gained
through this strategy in internationalization so the country
stays globally competitive.
University students in France currently pay the same low
tuition fees-there is no distinction based on whether students
are from France, from the EU, or from outside the EU.
The report by Nicolas Charles and Quentin Delpech of
France Stratégie is available online in French at

KAUST President Weighs in on
Freedom of Speech Debate

K

ing Abdullah University of Science and Technology University
(KAUST) has recently found itself in the spotlight due to a freedom
of speech controversy centering on a Saudi Arabian blogger.
At issue is the treatment of Raif Badawi, a Saudi Arabian writer and activist
who has been critical of Saudi Arabia's clerics. In May 2014 he was sentenced
to 10 years in jail as well as 1,000 lashes, a 10-year travel ban, and a lifetime
ban on appearing in media outlets once he is released, according to Amnesty
International.
In January 2015 an open letter signed by 18 Nobel laureates was sent to
KAUST University President Jean-Lou Chameau calling on him to stand up
for freedom of speech and support the freedom to dissent in Saudi Arabia.
Chameau, as reported in Times Higher Education (THE), has pushed back
on calls for him to condemn restrictions on freedom of speech, stressing instead that "universities have to reflect the societies within which they exist" and
"the greatest long-term impact will be achieved by instilling the values of openness and creativity in a generation of graduates," according to the THE article.
