N JANUARY 2014 representatives from more than 20
international education associations from around the world met
in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, for
the Global Dialogue on the Future
of the Internationalization of Higher
Education. From that event came the
Nelson Mandela Bay Declaration,
which emphasized the importance
of understanding a wide variety of
perspectives on internationalization.
Comprehensive Internationalization:
Institutional Pathways to Success
edited by John Hudzik, a NAFSA

to internationalization through case
studies from around the world.
This is one of the books in
a new "Internationalization in
Higher Education" series from
Routledge, edited by series editor
Elspeth Jones, which explores the
varying facets of internationalization, reflecting "the diversity and
complexity of this growing field"
(p. xv). Complimenting recent
significant publications in the
international higher education
field, this volume provides a more
in-depth understanding of institutional internationalization. While
the first part of the book explores
a range of strategies, practices,
trends, challenges, barriers, and
issues related to comprehensive
internationalization, the second
part of the book features 10 case
studies from institutions in Africa
(Nelson Mandela Metropolitan
University), Asia (Nanyang Technological University), Australia
(University of Queensland, Swinburne University of Technology),
Europe (Lund University/Blekinge
Institute of Technology, University of
Helsinki, University of Nottingham),
South America (Pontifical Catholic
University of Rio de Janeiro), and
the United States (Beloit College,
Michigan State University).
Building on the initial work of
the American Council on Education
on comprehensive internationalization, Hudzik provides a contextual
overview of institutional internationalization in Part 1 of the book. Of

particular relevance in this section
is a brief discussion of the "dark
side" of internationalization, the articulation of barriers coupled with
barrier reductions, and the chapter
on sustainable resources for
internationalization, given that (the
lack of) resources is cited as the
number one challenge for international education leaders. This first
part could be useful as a review of
some of the literature on internationalization and is geared more for
leaders, especially those new to the
field. In particular, Chapter 4 "From
Rhetoric and Concept to Reality"
includes some key strategies that
may be helpful for campus leaders.
The real strength of this book
lies in the case studies that are
included from institutions selected
based on their diversity of approaches to internationalization.
Particularly noteworthy are the
case studies from Africa, Asia, and
South America, since those elicit
perspectives from voices not often
represented in internationalization literature. Through those case
studies, the reader gains insights
into the role of national policy,
the pivotal role of leadership, the
importance of maintaining close
alignment with the academic mission, and the value of an integrated,
ongoing process that in the case of
South Africa was from the outset,
"inclusive, consultative, and trans-
