formational" (p. 185). The case studies
also provide insights into practical steps
that were taken to implement comprehensive internationalization. However, these
case studies should be taken within the
context of each unique institution, which
means that just as these case studies
represented a wide variety of approaches, there are multiple ways to approach
internationalization.
The book concludes with a final
chapter from Hudzik that attempts to pull
together the various case studies and
emerging common threads between the
two sections. Noting that none of the institutions in the case studies has "arrived"
in terms of comprehensive internationalization, Hudzik says that each presents
"the sense" of "unfolding stories in an
evolving twenty-first century context."
Hudzik observes that a "reading of all the

stories shows the complex interplay of
institutional history, traditions, twenty-first
century environment, goals, motivations
and internal and external drivers of comprehensive internationalization" (p. 238).
Hudzik is well-positioned to edit this
type of text, given his leadership roles both
institutionally as well as more broadly in
the international higher education field.
Though Hudzik does an admirable job of
trying to cover many of the salient issues
regarding comprehensive internationalization in this overview, the reader may
be overwhelmed by the contextual and
abstract information in the first several
chapters. Even though some of the latter
chapters in the first section attempt to provide implementable strategies, the reader
will need to wrestle with how to translate
these into practical, concrete steps toward
comprehensive internationalization within

a specific institutional context (which is
indeed what Part 2 addresses). Overall, this
is a text that represents a North American,
as well as European and Australian perspective, with the exception of a few case
studies. And although the case studies are
indeed the strength and uniqueness of this
text, as Hudzik acknowledged in the last
chapter, case authors "individualized their
stories within a general framework." This
means that "not every case highlights each
key point" resulting in great variance within
how each case is presented, which at times
produces more of an "ad hoc" effect that
nonetheless showcases the unique voice
and approach of each institution.
