A*STAR

Xinhong Lim, PhD, with Selva Kumar Nivasini and Ivo de Vos in the lab at the Singapore's Institute of Medical Biology.

More than 60 percent of the 700 current
A*STAR scholars are enrolled at universities
in the United States and Europe. National
University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University are among the highly
regarded local universities that have attracted
the remaining 40 percent of A*STAR scholars.
Although the overseas scholarships
are more costly, they provide scholars-
Singapore's future scientists-with the
opportunity to forge connections with other
researchers that could benefit their careers
and their country. "The other graduate students and postdocs with whom I worked
during my undergraduate and graduate
studies at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology have become lifelong friends
who have helped me and Singapore throughout my career," an A*STAR official said.
Regardless of whether they earn their
degrees overseas or in their home country,

A*STAR scholars "are expected to contribute to Singapore's research ecosystem
through a service commitment at one of
A*STAR's research entities," said Huan.
A*STAR encompasses 16 research institutes in the biomedical, engineering, and
computer sciences.
An A*STAR scholarship awardee's commitment ranges from one to six years,
depending on the number of years of
funding. After earning his BS degree from
Stanford in 2017, Lee will return to Singapore to spend one year at an A*STAR
research institute before beginning his PhD
degree studies. After Lee earns his PhD, his
obligation will total five years.
The 500 scholarship recipients who thus
far have been awarded their PhD degrees
are "actively contributing to A*STAR and
various sectors of the R&D ecosystem," said
Huan. While most are conducting scien-

tific research, others are pursuing careers
in patent examination and law, technology
transfer and commercialization, teaching,
and university and government administration in Singapore, he said.
Among the 500 former A*STAR scholars
is Xinhong Lim, PhD, a junior principal investigator at Singapore's Institute of Medical
Biology (IMB). Lim's lab at IMB investigates
skin cells to unravel the genetic circuitry that
regulates patterning, growth, and repair of
body tissue. The research is highly relevant
to tissue regeneration.
"Being able to study overseas at some
of the top institutions in the world greatly
broadened my perspectives, raised my
standards, and deepened my knowledge,
and this would all not have been possible
without the scholarship," said Lim, who was
awarded a BS degree in biochemistry at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW)
