and a PhD degree in developmental biology
at Stanford University.
Like many A*STAR scholars, Lim did not
limit his educational experience to his classroom studies. During the third week of his
freshman year, he began working as an undergraduate researcher in a UW laboratory
investigating wound healing. "Because I had
taken up a science scholarship, I decided to
try and expose myself to science" at UW, he
explained. "I actually stayed with the lab until my graduation, working my way up from
more mundane tasks like preparing buffers
and filling pipet tips to proposing research
topics, doing an independent research work,
and publishing papers. This proved to be a
formative experience because my undergrad
research mentors also helped me identify
my research interests in regenerative medicine and developmental biology."
At graduation, Lim was honored with
UW's prestigious Theodore Herfurth Award

for Initiative and Efficiency, which recognizes academic excellence and leadership.
While studying for his PhD at Stanford,
Lim conducted research on how stem cell
self-renewal and differentiation are balanced
in skin tissue. He also completed a part-time
mini-MBA course at the university's Graduate School of Business. The course involved
"interacting with the movers and shakers of
Silicon Valley, pitching to venture capitalists
(VCs), and doing projects with people who
are literally inventing the future," he said. "I
learned a lot about team leadership, organizational behavior, the business mindset and
operations, and how to make a good VC
pitch. I believe it has equipped me with the
perspectives and some skills that I will need
if I would like to translate my basic research
into the clinic or marketplace."
Current A*STAR scholar Gary Lee is
similarly active outside the classroom. "I am
conducting research as part of the Stanford

February 2015 presented his study results

A*STAR Graduate Academy organizes
an interview panel to evaluate scholarship
applications. "A*STAR scholars are selected
based on merit, their passion and aptitude
for science and research, excellent academic
ability, and commitment to contributing to
Singapore," said Huan. An interview panel
advises each new scholar about the universities with outstanding educational programs
in his or her area of interest, said Huan. The
panel also recommends whether the scholar
should attend a local or overseas university.
"The course of study, particularly at the
PhD level, should be in an area that aligns
with the research priorities of A*STAR,"
Huan said. The university to which the
scholar plans to apply and his or her course
of study are subject to approval by A*STAR's
scientific councils and the academy, he added.
A*STAR scholars must earn excellent
grades and evaluations by their university
advisers. "After every academic quarter, I am
required to submit my academic transcript
and an updated CV containing personal
