details, coursework, and club activities to
my scholarship officer to A*STAR," said Lee.
When he returns to Singapore each summer,
Lee meets with his A*STAR mentor. "I did
last year and obtained good advice," he said.
For Lee and other current scholars,
A*STAR provides much more than funding.
A*STAR officials arrange opportunities for
scholars to gain laboratory experience during their summer breaks. Last year, while
his friends at Stanford were searching for
summer internships, Lee was relaxed. "I was
already certain about my internship with
A*STAR," said Lee, who last summer worked
at Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics.
"We also have created opportunities
for scholars to develop their careers along
differentiated paths that suit their interests
and strengths, such as in research, academia,
industrial R&D, commercialization, intellectual property, entrepreneurial activities, and
research management," said Huan.
For universities that host A*STAR
scholars, there are benefits, said Edmund
G. Seebauer, PhD, the James W. Westwater
Professor and Head of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC),
where several A*STAR scholars have earned
their PhD degrees in engineering. A*STAR
scholars in the PhD program spend six
months at UIUC and the remainder of the
year at A*STAR.

UIUC's relationship with A*STAR has
enabled the university's faculty to mentor
"high-quality Singaporean students" and
"collaborate with investigators in A*STAR's
research institutes," said Seebauer. "The col-

laboration opportunities, access to institute
facilities, and funding from the program
enables UIUC faculty to strengthen their
research portfolios more readily than might
be possible by other means."
The host university's biggest challenge is
"to ensure that students remain closely engaged with their coadvisers on both sides of
the ocean throughout the entire course of
the PhD study," said Seebauer. "True engagement requires not only good intentions but
also a bit of discipline in both the students
and the busy coadvisers."
Seebauer added, "In some disciplines that
mandate considerable coursework for the
PhD, the need to take most of those modules
while at UIUC can also limit the time students spend doing research in the U.S." IE
