VOICES

Desalegne Mengesha Degefaw with colleagues at the University of Gondar

IE: How are you approaching your role

as NAFSA Global Dialogue Fellow?
Have you seen any benefits from that
relationship yet? If so, what?
DESALEGNE: As a NAFSA Global Dialogue
Fellow, I feel an obligation to promote the mission and vision of NAFSA. I have mentored
one of my colleagues to apply to NAFSA and
he is a 2016 Global Dialogue Fellow. I also at-

tended the NAFSA 2016 Annual Conference
in Denver, where I made a presentation on
Ethiopian higher education with other fellows. Since returning from Denver, I have
been sharing the experience I got from the
annual conference and expo. I see lots of opportunities for higher education institutions in
Ethiopia and in Africa to create partnerships
with many international institutions in higher

education. I have witnessed the presence of
many universities and educational institutions at the annual conference and expo. I feel
that it is more convenient to join this conference and expo than trying to visit universities
in some countries; it is really an ideal place to
network with many institutions all over the
world. I have also attended many sessions in
curriculum, teacher development, internationalization, study abroad, and other issues at the
conference and it really helped me in understanding the experience of many universities.

partnerships fit into the University of
Gondar's overall strategies? What are
your major goals in this area?
DESALEGNE: We have many international
partnerships with many universities and international organizations in many countries,
especially in Europe and North America,
including multimillion dollar projects currently with countries like the United States,
Canada, Belgium, Germany, the UK, France,
and other countries. In the United States,
we have joint projects with the Ohio State
University and John Hopkins University, for
example, and in Canada, we have projects
with Queens University and University of
Calgary. We also have various grants from
WHO, CDC, CIRHT, OIE, World Vision,
UNFPA, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,
UNICEF, DAAD, DNDi, and many other donors and international organizations.
Increasing global linkages, partnerships,
and internationalization is one of the themes
that we put in our five-year strategic plan,
