which is effective through 2020. This theme
spotlights enhancing strategic linkages and
partnerships with key stakeholders regionally, nationally, and internationally that yield
mutually beneficial outcomes and improving internationalization to make sure that
the university core processes are in line with
the rapidly changing advances in knowledge
and technology through collaboration in
joint projects. Our goals include expanding
domestic and international links in order to
maximize the number of partners, Staff, and
students' exposure and engagement with international exchange programs.
IE: Are there any challenges to

achieving those objectives?
DESALEGNE: The challenges we have in
running partnerships and joint programs
with foreign partners is a lack of good communication and a lack of understanding
regarding the cultural differences between

our setting and those of the other institutions abroad. Many of our staff have no
international experience and do not have
familiarity with the institutional cultures of
foreign partners. Many people in Ethiopian
higher education institutions still think that
partnerships are like donations and charities; they don't see them as joint projects for
mutual benefit. I strongly believe that there
are untapped opportunities for universities
and professors in the Western world to work
with African universities. We can generate a
lot of knowledge working together. We are
creating lots of study abroad opportunities
for graduate and undergraduate students.
IE: How does UoG support

internationalization? Is there an
international office? A budget? A
dedicated staff?
DESALEGNE: As I mentioned earlier, internationalization is one of our five themes in our

five-year strategy. We do have a public and
international relations office with full-time
staff. We also have a budget for making international visits and for hosting international
guests. The role of the international office is,
however, not as strong as we would like. Most
of the networking and partnerships are done
by the academic staff, the department heads,
the deans, and the top leadership. The big
challenge here is lack of experience to make
sustainable and effective communications
with partners. We are, however, demonstrating increasing strength in creating and
sustaining international partnerships, as witnessed by many of our multimillion dollar
projects with many universities and international organizations abroad.
