their international studies and experiences when it's
time to find and land a job. And as a result, more and
more students are focused on the career outcomes of
international education when making decisions about
which institution to attend.
This issue's feature story, "Leveraging Global
Experiences in the Job Market," examines how institutions
are presenting international programs in employability
terms to attract a wider student audience. The article
also explores how employability demands are driving
international program design and the types of global skills
that employers value.
Also featured in this issue is our cover story that looks
at women's universities around the world and how they
not only support women's education but also create
global leaders, and an in-depth interview with Desalegne
Degefaw, president of the University of Gondar in Ethiopia.
Other highlights in this issue include the importance of
diversity among international students in the United States,
international enrollment best practices for addressing
students without documents, and considerations and
opportunities related to planning U.S. study abroad
programs in Cuba.
Lastly, Marlene Johnson, NAFSA's executive director
and CEO from 1998-2016, retired in December 2016
after nearly 20 years of service to NAFSA and the larger
educational community. She shares her reflections on
her time at NAFSA and outlines some of the issues and
challenges that international educators will likely face in
years to come.
IE also extends a warm welcome to new executive
director and CEO Esther Brimmer, a foreign policy expert
and academic whose distinguished career includes three
appointments within the U.S. Department of State.
