Lessons Learned

Make study abroad accessible for
all. According to Provost Winston L.
Langley, approximately 46 percent of
all UMass Boston students receive Pell
Grants as part of their federal financial
aid package. To help make study
abroad accessible to all, some of the
income generated from the International Visiting Scholars Academy, a
certificate program for international
scholars, has been diverted to support
both student and faculty mobility.
The College for Advancing and
Professional Studies also opens up
programs to the general public on a
space available basis, and cross-lists
programs in the course catalog. "As
long as we reach a certain enrollment
number, then we can cover our costs,"
says Stanley Wanucha, director of the
university preparation program.

STEVE DUNWELL

Translate interest into participation.
Vice Provost Schuyler Korban says
it's always a challenge to find ways
to support faculty and students who
have an interest in international issues but do not participate in opportunities. "How do you convert interest
into a real act of participation? The
way to do it is by partnering those
with an interest, but don't know how,
with those who have the expertise of
how to internationalize."

The University of Massachusetts Boston is home to more than 17,000 students from 149
countries
Extend external funding to create
additional opportunities. Through its
China Program Center, UMass Boston
received a federal grant from the U.S.
Department of Education to run a
Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad
in advanced Chinese language immersion. Each year, it sends 16 undergraduate and graduate students to
China for eight months.

As part of the program, students
must complete an internship at a
business in the Xi'an High Tech Industrial Zone, often referred to as the
Silicon Valley of China. Based on its
relationship with the industrial zone,
UMass Boston has recently extended
the internship component to a summer program available to all UMass
Boston students.

UMass Boston's
scenic waterfront
campus is located
next to the John F.
Kennedy Library and
Presidential Museum,
the Commonwealth
Museum and
Massachusetts State
Archives, and the
Edward M. Kennedy
Institute for the United
States Senate
