U.S. Graduate Schools See First Decline in
International Enrollment Numbers Since 2003
FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE
2003 , U.S. graduate schools have seen a

year-over-year decline in first-time international enrollment numbers, according
to data from a recent survey conducted
by the Council of Graduate Schools and
the Graduate Record Examinations Board.
From 2006 to 2016, U.S. graduate schools
saw an average annual growth of 7.4
percent in their first-time international
enrollment numbers. From 2015 to 2016,
enrollment was down 0.9 percent. The

decline is a minor one, but experts are
watching to see if this is an aberration or
the beginning of a trend.
Even with the decline, international
students continue to make up a significant

portion of overall graduate enrollment
numbers; 21.2 percent of graduate students
in the United States are international,
according to fall 2016 enrollment numbers
featured in the report. However, the dip in
enrollment numbers means that graduate
schools are facing increased pressure to
take a robust approach to their recruitment, enrollment, and retention efforts.

Report Explores Impact of U.S. Study on
International Students' Career Prospects
A RECENT REPORT from World Education Services, which

surveyed more than 2,100 current and former international
students, takes an in-depth look at the impact of a U.S. education
on international students' employability prospects. The goal of the
study was to gain a clearer picture of international students' career
aspirations and how these aspirations impact the students' choice
of university, how U.S. education has affected the students' career
prospects after graduation, and how U.S. university career services
offices can better tailor their offerings to fulfill the unique needs of
international students.
Key takeaways from the report include:
-Ninety-one percent of the respondents believe that their U.S.
education was a good investment.
-Eighty-seven percent believe that their U.S. education is having a
positive impact on their career prospects.
-Seventy-four percent said that acceptance of their U.S. degree in
their home countries or elsewhere outside the United States was
their top concern in choosing a U.S. institution.
-Respondents who were still in the United States at the time of
the survey reported that work authorization and professional
networking were their top challenges.
-Forty-seven percent of former international students who had

returned to their home countries cited work- or visa-related
issues as their partial or entire motivation for doing so.
-Current and former students reported being pleased with
résumé and cover letter preparation services at their U.S. institution's career office. However, both groups reported a desire for
improved services to connect them with potential employers and
prepare them for interviews.
-A slim majority (52 percent) of respondents who were living
in the United States at the time of the survey reported that the
actions of the Trump administration, such as implementing the
so-called travel ban and scaling back the popular H1-B visa program, had negatively affected their future career plans.
Based on the findings, the report recommends that U.S.
institutions:
-Encourage and incentivize international students to take advantage of career services earlier in their academic careers;
-Develop strategies for connecting students with employment
opportunities in their home countries or abroad; and
-Tailor offerings to the unique needs of different student groups.
