Malaysia

Over the past decade, the Malaysian government has
been setting ambitious education goals as it tries to
position the country as an education hub in Southeast
Asia, and to capitalize on the rising demand for international education opportunities.
The numbers of international students enrolled

250,000

in Malaysian universities, Malaysian students participating in study abroad, and branch campuses in the
country have all increased over the past few years.
Given these developments, experts see potential for
additional growth as the country continues to ramp
up its education initiatives.

according to a plan announced in
2015.

The number of Malaysian students studying in the United States
during the 2016-2017 academic year, according to Open Doors
data from the Institute of International Education. This represents
an increase of more than 56 percent since 2005. Among Southeast
Asian countries, only Vietnam and Indonesia have higher numbers
of students who study abroad in the United States.
