Playback - Fall 2008 - (Page 11) their own personal history of discoveries, challenges, triumphs and defeats. These stories are what help us to make sense of our journeys and by sharing them with future generations, we provide others with insights and information that they can use in their own lives and careers as well. Like a proud uncle documenting his family’s genealogy, NAMM Historian Dan Del Fiorentino spends his days tracking down music products pioneers who have their own important stories to tell, stories about our industry’s history that, once lost, could never be told in quite the same way again. Dan does it because, much like a family, the music products community is a tight-knit group with a shared legacy of challenges and achievements. And no matter how diverse its members, people in our industry are interconnected and have something very important in common: They are driven by a passion for music and music making. The Oral History Program was established in 1998 under the leadership of former NAMM President Larry Linkin. After the passing of several industry legends in the mid’90s, many people felt a need to begin documenting and preserving the history of our business, and NAMM was charged with this important task. The first interview was with the president of Gibson Guitar, Ted McCarty, in June 2000. And now, 999 interviews later, the Oral History Program is celebrating its 1,000th interview with another industry icon: Roland U.S. President and former NAMM Chairman Dennis Houlihan. Over the next few pages, you’ll find excerpts from some of our favorite interviews, as well as a little industry trivia, insights on the man behind the microphone and a new wish list of industry professionals to profile. Enjoy! Everyone has a story to tell VOICES OF OUR PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE 11
