Playback - Fall 2008 - (Page 18) RETAIL “We Treat Everyone Like a Rock Star” CHICAGO MuSIC ExCHANGE OWNER SCOtt SILVER CHALkS uP HIS StORE’S SuCCESS tO tHREE tHINGS: HARD WORk, AN INVItING AtMOSPHERE AND OVER-tHE-tOP CuStOMER SERVICE. When Scott Silver was 13 years old, his mom bought him his first guitar. With visions of Kiss and Aerosmith dancing in his head, he grew passionate about playing music and soon began performing with bands of his own. By the time he reached his mid-20s, though, Scott was at a crossroads. “The music scene was good, but I didn’t see it going in the right direction for me,” he says. “Then someone introduced me to the vintage guitar business. He sold me a bass for $200, which I then turned around and sold for $450 the next day. That’s when I asked my friend, ‘How do you do this? Where do you find instruments?’ He explained it all to me and once you point me in the right direction, I’m a speeding bullet.” Scott’s been moving forward with his vintage guitar business ever since. At first he bought just one or two instruments at a time, sold them and bought more. After growing his inventory to more than 100 guitars, he decided to open a small store. Over the years, it grew in size and scope, enabling Scott to move into his dream store on Chicago’s Lincoln Avenue, just six blocks from Wrigley Field. There’s nothing like selling a kid his first guitar and seeing the look on his face. It’s not about money; it’s about the feeling it gives you. He walks in, mom or dad buys him the guitar and he starts his life as a musician. That’s the biggest reward to what I do, hands down. 18 PLAYback
