The groups worked to ensure the success of ISME’s first-ever Italian conference with inspiring keynote speakers, a multitude of session topics and a large number of performance ensembles, set against the backdrop of beautiful and historic Bologna, the city that is home to the western world’s oldest university. Nearly 1,400 people from 73 countries, as well as approximately 1,500 performers, attended to celebrate the rich diversity of music as it is taught internationally and to share knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment for music education. The weeklong conference featured nearly 800 presentations related to music teaching, music education research and music for people of different age groups, which were organized to emphasize an interdisciplinary approach across all aspects of education and with other disciplines. The Gibson Foundation, which works with ISME in support of the same types of programs, recognized the outstanding contributions to music education by ISME members Carlo Delfrati and Francesco Galtieri. Gibson Foundation Executive Director Nina Miller presented a check for $50,000 to honor these accomplishments; the funds will be used to develop or support the music programs with which they are involved to create opportunities that would not otherwise exist. “ISME is a society that counts on partner institutions to grow and to expand its scope of action,” says Liane Hentschke, ISME’s immediate past president. “NAMM has, for the past five years, worked very closely with ISME as our major international partner. It is a partnership that grows and consolidates every day, because ISME and NAMM have similar visions on the importance of music education to build a peaceful and sustainable world for our children.” The next ISME World Conference will take place in August 2010 in Beijing, China. NAMM Foundation Presents Grant Check to MIA NAMM Board Member Robert Wilson presents Music Industries Association (U.K.) Chief Executive Paul McManus with a check from the NAMM Foundation during the London International Music Show. As one of the recipients of the NAMM Foundation’s 2008–2009 grants program, this funding will support the expansion of the association’s Music For All “Learn to Play” program. FALL 2008 29
