Playback - Fall 2008 - (Page 30) NAMM FOUNDATION Support Music Celebrates Its Fifth Anniversary In 2003, NAMM and MENC created SupportMusic.com, a music advocacy Web site designed to provide parents, educators and community leaders with valuable resources and tools to keep music programs strong in their communities. Now, five years later, it’s become a thriving coalition, with more than 190 affiliate organizations coming together to forward the cause. “We are extremely proud of the fact that NAMM and MENC have been able to bring together so many like-minded organizations to support our shared cause and ensure quality education for every child,” says NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond. “Support Music has made great strides over the past five years, and it’s just getting started.” In addition to reaching 5,000 visitors a month on the Support Music Web site, the coalition regularly distributes community action kits and music advocacy brochures at a variety of music education events; convenes monthly teleconferences to exchange news and strategies on everything from impacting state-level education legislation to include music and the arts for all children, to proactively warding off local budget cuts to music programs. The coalition posts a monthly member newsletter, Counterpoint, featuring advocacy articles by guest authors including Congressman Jon Porter (D-Nev.), former National School Board Association president Joan Schmidt and Music for All’s Bob Morrison. Former presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Gov. Bill Richardson have been among the highlevel decision-makers to join on the Support Music teleconferences. NAMM Members are encouraged to become Support Music Coalition affiliates to learn how they can help keep music education strong in their communities. To find out more about the Coalition, please call the NAMM Contact Center at 800-767-6266. Joined by a shared desire to keep music alive in the public schools, the Support Music Coalition continues to grow and offer valuable service to grassroots music education advocates. The coalition, composed of local, state, national and international affiliate organizations, works cooperatively to advance quality music education around the world. “Support Music has made great strides over the past five years, and it’s just getting started.” 30 PLAYback http://www.SupportMusic.com http://www.SupportMusic.com
