Playback - Fall 2008 - (Page 31) Grantee Profile: The National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts Believing that involvement in the arts is essential to individual fulfillment and community life, the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts represents a diverse constituency of nonprofit organizations that provide arts education in urban, suburban and rural communities throughout the United States. The National Guild advances high-quality, community arts education so that all people may participate in the arts according to their interests and abilities. They support the creation and development of community arts education organizations by providing research and information resources, professional development and networking opportunities, advocacy and high-profile leadership. The NAMM Foundation is one of the sponsors of the Guild’s upcoming conference, to be held in Philadelphia, October 29–November 1, where NAMM Board Member Bill Reim of Hoshino will present the organization with a NAMM Foundation grant check during the plenary and keynote address. The Guild represents more than 300 organizations in 45 states, Canada and the Virgin Islands. Together these groups employ more than 16,000 teaching artists, educate more than 600,000 students and reach an additional 3 million arts enthusiasts each year. Over the past year, NAMM has worked with the National Guild to develop, distribute and promote “The Creative Aging Toolkit,” a resource kit for the arts and aging field to help get older adults actively involved in the arts. A Spanish language version of the kit is now available. To learn more about the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts, visit www.nationalguild.org. Back-to-School Music Advocacy Simple with “Why Learn to Play Music?” Brochures “We love the ‘Why Learn to Play Music?’ brochures, and insert one in each band and orchestra instrument we rent, as well as our new student welcome packages. We also use the information and the testimonials during rental nights and throughout our Web site. I particularly appreciate the fact that it’s printed in both English and Spanish as we support a large Spanish-speaking audience. It’s a great resource that helps us both recruit and retain new music makers!” ROBIN R. WALENTA West Music Company President/CEO To order “Why Learn to Play Music?” brochures for your store, call NAMM at 800-767-6266. Call for 2009 NAMM Foundation Grant Proposals The NAMM Foundation is now accepting grant proposals for projects that further NAMM’s mission of creating more active music makers of all ages on behalf of its Members and expanding access to music making.
