Playback - Fall 2008 - (Page 4) THE BEAT A Note from Joe Our Industry Has a Story to Tell Our industry is filled with an amazing bunch of creative, passionate individuals. We see this at the NAMM shows. We read it every month in the industry trade magazines. NAMM Members are out there—opening the store early, staying late, teaching music to people of all ages, working with students and community schools, and setting up programs to create more music makers. All of these wonderful people have a great story to tell. That’s where the Oral History Program comes in, capturing on video the stories of these industry innovators, music makers and music advocates. With the vision of Larry Linkin, this program kicked off in 2000 and the goal was set to commemorate the 100th anniversary of NAMM with 100 interviews in the first 10 years. Of course we can see that goal was surpassed and then some, as we’ve just completed the 1,000th interview in a few short years. are able to view clips from loved ones, and they’ve told us how fortunate they feel that they get to see them discussing their lives’ passion in this industry. These legacies will likely prove to be invaluable to future generations. To see some of these memorable clips, please visit NAMM’s Oral History Program site at www.namm.org/library/oral-history. We are grateful to all of the industry members who have contributed to our historical library, either by sharing their stories in an interview or by suggesting the names of inspirational people who should be interviewed. Please send us your comments and the names of people you think we should interview next (even if that person is you!). People are encouraging their entire staff to watch and learn about this business and its pioneers. Sincerely, Perhaps Keith Mardak of Hal Leonard said it best when he claimed, “Watching these videos is like taking a course in ‘Business 101.’” People are encouraging their entire staff to watch and learn about this business and its pioneers.
